‘Could be blessing in disguise’ – Ravi Shastri on Virat Kohli stepping down as RCB captain in IPL

Date:

Virat Kohli earlier announced that he will not be leading RCB in the IPL 2022 season. This is the reason why Bangalore picked Faf du Plessis going into the 15th edition. Now, Ravi Shastri, the former Indian Head Coach feels that this might work in favor of Virat Kohli and can be a blessing in disguise.

Virat Kohli has left the captaincy across all the formats of cricket. He left Team India’s captaincy in order to put more focus on his batting. And, this was the main reason behind leaving the captaincy of Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kohli is currently one of the best batsmen in international cricket but he has been failing to justify his potential with his batting.

He has not scored a single century in the past three years in IPL or international cricket. And, cricket fans are eagerly waiting for him to regain his best batting form. In an interview, Ravi Shastri, who was the head coach of Team India during Kohli’s captaincy period, said that leaving RCB’s captaincy could be a good thing for the right-handed batsman.

“I think [giving up captaincy] could be a blessing in disguise, to be honest. The pressures of captaincy off his shoulders, the expectations that come with being captain no longer there. He can go out, express himself, play freely, and I think he’ll look to do just that,” Shastri told ESPNcricinfo.

“I think the most important thing is not to worry about his own performances, because he’s done enough in world cricket for people to know where he stands. It’s about him wanting to enjoy himself out there. I think that is the key. It’s mind over matter, it’s a case of telling yourself, ‘I want to go there, express myself, and enjoy myself, “he added.

Kohli will be seen in action during the Indian Premier League plying traits for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Bangalore-based franchise will open their tournament campaign on 27th March against Punjab Kings.
