UEFA Super Cup 2023: Manchester City Register Gritty Victory Over Sevilla In Penalties

Date:

In what was an absolute crackerjack of a game, Manchester City held their nerves and registered a victory over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup 2023 game. The match had a 1-1 stalemate post regulation and extra-time and had to go down to the penalties.

It was Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City that had the last laugh in this game as they won the penalty round, 5-4. In the 25th minute of the game, Sevilla had scored the goal against The Cityzens and had put Sevilla’s noses ahead in the game.

Youssef En-Nesyri had scored the goal for the Spanish side and had given them hope and inspiration in this game. The half-time score read 1-0 in favour of Sevilla and Manchester City were under the pump.

But the half-time pep-talk from Pep Guardiola changed things for Manchester City as they looked more poised and balanced in the second-half. A header from Cole Palmer in the 63rd minute ensured that Manchester City crawl back into the game.

Sevilla had received several chances to score in the second-half but they failed to secure a goal and they would be ruing their chances. The Europa League 2022-23 winners were confident in this game but couldn’t convert their chances and opportunities into goals.

The penalty round was quite action-packed

As the action boiled down to the penalties, things were quite nervy and gripping. The first 9 shots from both the sides, all went to the back of the net. But the 10th shot from Sevilla, which was taken by defender Nemanja Gudelj, hit the crossbar and Manchester City won the game.

It was agony for the Sevilla and on the other hand, it was sheer ecstasy for Manchester City and co. Under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola, it was Manchester City’s 15th trophy since 2016, when his reign started.

Guardiola has completely revolutionized Manchester City and has made them an absolute juggernaut. Manchester City have won 5 out of the last 6 Premier League seasons and have absolutely stamped their authority in the top-flight competition of English football.

The Treble winners of last season have successfully exorcised the ghosts of their FA Community Shield loss at the hands of Arsenal, a few days back. Manchester City had lost to Arsenal in the penalties, after the game finished 1-1.

The score-line in the penalty round read 4-1 in favour of Arsenal and Manchester City couldn’t continue their dominant run. But this victory would signal happy times once again in their camp.
