With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaching, India faces a significant concern regarding the fitness of their pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah.

Battling a back issue since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah’s participation hinges on medical clearance, prompting the BCCI to consider potential replacements. Here are three players in contention to fill Bumrah’s shoes:

    1. Harshit Rana

Harshit Rana has quickly gained recognition with his impressive performances in the limited-overs format.

The 23-year-old fast bowler showcased his potential in the recent ODI series against England, picking up four wickets in two matches.

Rana’s energetic and aggressive style, combined with his ability to bowl at high speeds, makes him a strong candidate to replace Bumrah. Aakash Chopra has noted that Rana will be selected if Bumrah doesn’t travel to Dubai.

    2. Prasidh Krishna

Prasidh Krishna has become a vital part of India’s limited-overs setup.

He has demonstrated his ability to trouble batsmen and bowl deliveries that prevent them from settling in.

Krishna has played 17 ODIs, picking up 29 wickets with an economy of 5.60, showcasing his potential to make an impact.

    3. Shardul Thakur

Shardul Thakur brings all-round capabilities, adding balance to the team with his batting in the lower order.

His recent form in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season, where he scored 396 runs and picked up 30 wickets in 8 matches, provides a great boost to India’s Champions Trophy squad.

Thakur has played 47 ODI matches for India, picking up 65 wickets with an economy of 6.22, his experience is an added advantage.

    Other Potential Replacements

Apart from the names listed above, Mohammed Siraj is also a strong contender to replace Bumrah due to his experience. Avesh Khan and Akash Deep could also be considered.

Jasprit Bumrah was named in India’s 15-member squad with an asterisk, indicating his inclusion is subject to fitness.

The BCCI is working against the clock to assess Bumrah’s fitness, as he remains a crucial component of India’s pace attack.

The management is closely monitoring his rehabilitation, hoping for a positive update ahead of the Champions Trophy.
