Despite having the richest board in cricket and some world class players, things are presently looking bleak for the Indian cricket team. The morale of the players are down by a huge margin as the Indian cricket team hasn’t been winning any major International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy for a long time. This could possibly lead to India exiting from the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in the playoffs or in the group-stage.
India had last won the ICC ODI World Cup way back in 2011 under the astute captaincy of MS Dhoni. The legendary and talismanic leader of India led the country to 3 ICC titles. Ever since he left captaincy and the team subsequently, there has been a big void in the Indian team.
India hasn’t been able to win any ICC trophy and this has led to the fans being livid and disappointed.
In this article, we take a look at 3 reasons why India might not win the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023:
1. A lot of the players are not fit
The Indian cricket team is undergoing a spate of injuries and this has had an impact on their performances. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have all been out of cricketing action for a prolonged period of time and this has been a major reason for India’s downfall.
We feel that there is a high possibility of a few cricketers not being fit and ready before the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Rishabh Pant has already been ruled out of the upcoming marquee event after he went through a fatal car crash in December 2023.
2. India haven’t been in the best of form in ODIs.
India recently have been facing major problems in the ODI format. They have been far from their usual best and haven’t had results being going in their way. In the latter part of 2022, India had lost against Bangladesh (1-2).
Post that in March 2023, the Indian cricket team lost 1-2 to Australia at home. And most recently, the Indian cricket team lost the 2nd ODI in the ongoing 3-match ODI series versus West Indies.
All these results have resulted in the confidence levels of the players plunging into a low state.
3. India’s records in ICC events is not good
The Indian cricket team has always reached close but have never been able to cross the finishing line since 2013. India have participated in 4 ICC T20 World Cups, 1 ICC Champions Trophy, 2 World Test Championship (WTC) finals and 2 ICC ODI World Cups and have faltered in the tournaments.
This definitely will reside in the subconscious mind of the players and might end up making them nervous during the big stages.
Plus, the pressure of playing at home will definitely be there. The home crowd will be a big factor which might or might not work in India’s favour.
Due to all these reasons, we feel that the Indian cricket team might not win the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
