The Asian Games 2022 Women’s cricket event has come to and end and as expected, India ruled the roost and bagged the gold medal. It was a historic occasion for the Indian women as they bagged the elusive gold medal in their maiden attempt.
Despite receiving a setback in the initial stages of the tournament by not having their regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur in the side, the Indians didn’t bog down under pressure. Stand-in-skipper Smriti Mandhana led charge in a good fashion and ensured that India lay their hands on the gold medal at the highest stage.
India eclipsed past all their opposition and were unbeaten in the tournament, that was marred by rain majorly. Notably, India played the quarter finals directly as they were among the teams with the highest seed in the tournament.
Prior to this edition, cricket was played at the Asian Games, way back in 2014. India didn’t participate in it. Among the 37 sports, cricket found a place this time and the crowds at Hangzhou weren’t disappointed as this was a major spectacle for them.
The finals were played between India and Sri Lanka and Harmanpreet Kaur and co. didn’t leave any stone unturned in their successful quest towards the gold medal. They ticked all the boxes and ensured that they lived up to their high expectations and their high billing.
In the finals, Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues were the top performers with the willow for Team India. The duo scored 46 and 42 runs respectively and powered India to a total of 116 runs.
In response, Sri Lanka women managed to score only 97 runs in 20 overs. Titas Sadhu was breathing fire with the white-cherry as she bagged 3 wickets in 4 overs and conceded only 6 runs.
Rajeshwari Gaikwad too performed well as she took 2 wickets in this game and ensured that India had the final laugh in this game of the Asian Games 2022. India thereby scripted history and once again proved to everyone, that they are a force to reckon with in women’s cricket.
