The Indian women’s cricket team endured a difficult campaign in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in UAE as they crashed out in the group-stage encounters itself. After losses to New Zealand and Australia and after Pakistan failed to beat New Zealand, India finished in the 3rd position in Group A, behind table-toppers Australia women and New Zealand women.

India didn’t have any competitive cricket post the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 in the month of July 2024 and only had training camps. This affected their game presence and India failed to accustom themselves to the slow and sluggish conditions in UAE.

As per a report in Indian Express, the top brass of the Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) is all set to undergo a meeting to discuss the future of Harmanpreet Kaur, the skipper of Team India.

The report further states that the meeting will be taking place before BCCI announces the squad for the 3-match ODI series versus New Zealand, that will kickstart from 24th October 2024.

Head Coach Amol Muzumdar and the selection committee will be present and the report also highlights the possibility of the coaching staff of the Indian women’s cricket team, undergoing a shake-up.

“The BCCI will certainly discuss whether to have a new captain on board going ahead. The Indian board has provided everything that the team wanted, and we feel it’s high time a new face leads the team going ahead. Harmanpreet will continue to be an important member of the team, but the BCCI feels it’s time for transition,” said a BCCI source as quoted by Indian Express in their report.

Team India were favourites to win the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

The Indian women’s cricket team, who were the finalists of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020, were favourites to win the title alongside defending champions Australia women.

But they had a torrid start to the campaign as they lost the plot against New Zealand women in their T20 World Cup opener by 58 runs. That not only dented their confidence but also had a big impact on their Net Run-Rate (NRR).

The Indian batters were bundled out for a paltry score of 102 runs against New Zealand women. Post that, they defeated Pakistan women by 6 wickets and Women’s Asia Cup 2024 winners, Sri Lanka women, by 82 runs.

But in their last group-stage game, Harmanpreet Kaur and co. lost the game to Australia women by 9 runs and that was the final nail in the coffin.

Pakistan women eventually lost to New Zealand women by 54 runs and that marked the end of the campaign for the Indians.
