The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed dissatisfaction with the current support staff under head coach Gautam Gambhir, particularly regarding the coaching credentials of his assistants, Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate.
This scrutiny follows India’s disappointing performances in recent series, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where the team failed to qualify for the World Test Championship final for the first time.
BCCI’s Concerns
During a recent review meeting involving key figures such as chief selector Ajit Agarkar, captain Rohit Sharma, and newly-elected BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, the board raised concerns about the coaching expertise of Nayar and ten Doeschate, both of whom lack Test match experience.
While bowling coach Morne Morkel’s credentials were not questioned due to his extensive Test background, there is a growing sentiment that Nayar and ten Doeschate may not possess the necessary coaching depth for the longer format of the game.
Potential Changes Ahead
In light of these concerns, the BCCI is considering adding Sitanshu Kotak to the coaching staff as a batting coach.
Kotak, who has previously served as a batting coach for various domestic teams, is well-regarded for his technical knowledge and could provide valuable insights to enhance the team’s batting performance ahead of crucial upcoming fixtures, including the Champions Trophy 2025.
The BCCI plans to finalize any changes after the Champions Trophy concludes on March 9, 2025. The board is keen on reinforcing the coaching setup with personnel who have proven expertise, particularly as India prepares for its tour of England later this year.
Gambhir’s Approach Under Scrutiny
Gautam Gambhir’s coaching style has also come under scrutiny. Critics have likened his approach to that of former coach Greg Chappell, suggesting that it may not resonate well with Indian players. Gambhir’s management style has reportedly led to friction between him and senior players over team culture and demands during tours.
Furthermore, his personal assistant’s involvement with the team has raised eyebrows among BCCI officials, leading to questions about professionalism within the setup.
