In the ongoing WI vs IND T20I series, Tilak Varma has been in fine form. He has integrated himself well into the international setup and has been showcasing his mettle in the international stage.
Notably, Varma is the leading run-scorer in the T20I series so far. In 4 games, the youngster has amassed 146 runs and has an outstanding average of 73.00. Several former cricketers and even present cricketers have lavished praise on the southpaw.
For instance, Ravichandran Ashwin has heaped praise on Tilak Varma and backed the 20-year-old cricketer to be in the Indian squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
“This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7,” said Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel.
Team India skipper and also Varma’s skipper in Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rohit Sharma has broken the silence on the youngster’s prospects at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 squad of India.
“He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing. In him I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite matured. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period,” said Rohit Sharma as quoted by Hindustan Times.
“That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India,” Sharma added.
Tilak Varma has displayed fearlessness in the T20I series
After being handed a debut in the 1st T20I itself, Tilak Verma showed what he is capable of. In the very first T20I, he scored 39 and then backed it up with his maiden half-century in international cricket in the next game.
His knock of 51 runs in the 2nd T20I underlined his maturity and showcased his hunger and grit. Varma then scored 49* runs in the 3rd T20I.
Even if he is not in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 squad of India, Tilak Varma has the potential to play regularly for India in the coming future. His ability to quickly get off the blocks and his ability to take on the pacers and spinners alike, has made him a force to reckon with in the Indian squad.
