    New BCCI Secretary

Devajit Saikia has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), replacing Jay Shah, who recently transitioned to the role of ICC Chairman.

This announcement was made during a Special General Meeting held on January 12, 2025. Alongside Saikia’s appointment, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia has been elected unopposed as the new Treasurer of the BCCI.

    Background on Devajit Saikia

Devajit Saikia, a former first-class cricketer from Assam, played four matches during the 1990-91 season, where he scored a total of 53 runs and made nine dismissals as a wicketkeeper.

Despite a brief playing career, Saikia has built a robust profile in cricket administration. He previously served as the BCCI’s Joint Secretary and was also the Secretary of the Assam Cricket Association.

Following Jay Shah’s elevation to ICC Chairman on December 1, Saikia had been performing the duties of acting secretary.

Saikia’s appointment comes at a crucial time as he will now oversee various administrative functions and strategic decisions within the BCCI.

His experience in cricket administration is expected to be instrumental in navigating the challenges ahead for Indian cricket.

    Prabhtej Singh Bhatia’s Role

Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, who hails from Chhattisgarh, has also been elected unopposed as Treasurer.

His role will involve managing the financial aspects of the BCCI, ensuring transparency and efficiency in financial operations.

Both appointments were confirmed by BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla, who stated that there was no need for a poll as they were the only candidates to file nominations.

    The transition from Jay Shah

Jay Shah’s tenure as BCCI Secretary has been marked by significant achievements, including overseeing the successful hosting of major tournaments such as the 2023 Cricket World Cup and facilitating infrastructure developments like the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

His transition to ICC Chairman is seen as an elevation that reflects his contributions to cricket administration at both national and international levels.

Shah’s departure from the BCCI has left big shoes to fill, but Saikia’s background and experience position him well to continue driving forward the initiatives that have characterized recent successes in Indian cricket.
