Former Pakistani Cricketer Comes Out In Support Of Lakshadweep Amidst Maldives Row

Date:

The entire world has been involved in the Lakshadweep-Maldives discussion and has been taking sides. After Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, visited Lakshadweep and shared a few pictures from his heart-warming stay at the beach and his snorkeling activities, a few officials of the Maldives government had passed derogatory remarks on India’s leader.

Those remarks did not sit well with the Indians and several actors and influencers took to social media to promote Lakshadweep and condemned the remarks of the minister of the Maldivian government.

The whole idea of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” was again floating up and several Indians have already booked their holidays in the beautiful union territory of India, Lakshadweep. Lakshadweep is off the coast of Kerala and has a group of 36 islands.

Amidst this entire row, former Pakistani leg-spinner, Danish Kaneria, has come out in support of Lakshadweep. Kaneria took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and posted just a single word, ‘Lakshadweep’ and accompanied it with a fire emoji.

The post has gone viral and has had more than 1 million views. At a time when Maldives was hoping for support of the other countries as it is receiving heavy backlash from Indians, Danish Kaneria opted to take the side of his immediate neighbours, India.

Tempers have flared on social media and even though the Maldives government has issued a statement highlighting that personal opinions do not echo the government’s views, the Indians have torn apart the Maldives government.

“The Government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government of Maldives…Moreover, the relevant authorities of the Government will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks.” the statement read.

Danish Kaneria has played 61 Tests and 18 ODIs for Pakistan

Known for bowling a great googly, Danish Kaneria played 61 Test matches and 18 ODIs for Pakistan. In these matches, he has bagged 261 and 15 wickets, respectively. Kaneria was one of the best spinners during his time and made Pakistan win several matches in the longest format of the game.

During West Indies’ tour of Pakistan in 2006, Kaneria bowled extremely well and had bagged 7 wickets in the game, while conceding only 77 runs in the entire game. This was one of his most memorable matches.
