Gautam Gambhir has publicly defended KL Rahul amid scrutiny following India’s disappointing performance in the first Test against New Zealand, where they suffered a humiliating defeat by eight wickets.

This match marked a low point for India, as they were bowled out for just 46 runs, their lowest total at home in Test history.

The second Test is set to begin on October 24 in Pune, and the pressure is on the Indian team to bounce back and keep their hopes alive for the World Test Championship final.

Gambhir emphasized that KL Rahul should not be solely blamed for the team’s failures, noting that every player goes through rough patches.

He highlighted that Rahul’s recent form does not reflect his capabilities as a player and urged fans and critics to provide him with the support he needs during this challenging time.

Gambhir stated, “KL is a quality player; he has the ability to turn things around” and suggested that the team management should have faith in him. Also,

“Social media doesn’t decide playing XI. It is not important what social media or experts think, it is important what team management thinks. Ultimately, everyone is judged, international cricket is about being judged. Everyone’s performance will be judged eventually,” Gambhir said in the press conference on the eve of the second Test”.

Gambhir recalled Rahul’s remarkable and selfless innings of 68 runs off 43 balls at Green Park in Kanpur against Bangladesh, which played a crucial role in helping India secure a result.

Team Dynamics Ahead of the Second Test

The Indian team faces a selection dilemma as they prepare for the crucial second Test.

With Shubman Gill returning from injury, there are questions about whether Rahul will retain his place in the starting XI.

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed that both Gill and Rishabh Pant are fit to play, which complicates the lineup further.

Ten Doeschate acknowledged Rahul’s struggles but reiterated that he is in a good mental space and has been working hard in practice.

The Indian team has been actively involved in preparing the pitch to suit their strengths.

The second Test will take place at 9:30 AM IST on October 24, 2024. India needs a win not only to level the series but also to maintain their chances for a spot in the World Test Championship final. The pitch at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium is expected to be dry and slow, which could favor spinners.

The stakes are high as they look to recover from their recent setbacks and regain their standing in international cricket.
