Australia are presently touring India for a 4-match Test series followed by a 3-match ODI series. While India are leading the Test series 2-1, the 4th Test match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is underway.
Australian skipper Pat Cummins has already missed the 3rd and the 4th Test matches of the ongoing Border Gavaskar Test series. This is because his mother is seriously ill and he has gone back home to attend to her.
David Warner too missed the last 2 Test matches because of an elbow injury. Now according to a report, the duo is likely to miss the ODI series too.
Cummins is not injured but he is likely to skip the ODI series as he would be opting to stay with his mother, who is in palliative care.
Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh too will be missing the ODI series for Australia
Australia already have been jolted by the absence of swashbuckling all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. Post the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, Maxwell suffered a leg injury while attending a birthday party. It was a very serious injury.
According to a report in Zero Cricket, the Australian team management does not want to take any risk with the star all-rounder as the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will be played later this year.
Mitchell Marsh had suffered an ankle injury and had recovered as well. But the team management don’t want him to be included in the playing XI for the same reason. The absence of Marsh during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 would be more costly for the Australian cricket team.
The duo likely to feature in IPL
That being said, both Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh are likely to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While Maxwell plies his trade for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Mitchell Marsh plays for the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise.
Skipper Pat Cummins has skipped IPL 2023 and will be focussing on the upcoming Ashes Test series versus England. David Warner would be looking to have a good IPL season with Delhi Capitals and present a strong case for his automatic selection in the playing XI of Australia in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
