Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been dropped from the playing XI for the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

This decision comes as India trails the series 2-1 and follows Sharma’s disappointing performance throughout the series.

Rohit Sharma’s form has been a significant concern leading up to this Test. In five innings during the ongoing series, he scored only 31 runs, averaging a mere 6.20.

His struggles with the bat have raised questions about his position in the team, especially given India’s need for a strong performance to level the series.

Historically, Rohit sharma has been a key player for India, but his recent form has been underwhelming. In 2024, he scored just 619 runs in 14 matches at an average of 24.76, which included two centuries and two fifties.

This slump in form has prompted discussions about his future in Test cricket, particularly with the next World Test Championship cycle on the horizon.

With Rohit out of the lineup, Jasprit Bumrah is set to lead India in this crucial match. Bumrah’s leadership will be pivotal as India looks to secure a win at SCG, which is essential not only for pride but also for their slim chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship final.

The decision to drop Rohit was hinted at during a press conference held by head coach Gautam Gambhir, who remained non-committal when asked about Rohit’s inclusion. Gambhir stated that the final playing XI would be determined based on pitch conditions, further fueling speculation about Rohit’s status.

The absence of Rohit Sharma has led to significant changes in India’s lineup. Shubman Gill, who was dropped after the Melbourne Test, is expected to return and take up a position in the batting order.

Additionally, adjustments have been made to India’s slip cordon during practice sessions, with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul taking up positions typically held by Rohit.

This shift indicates a tactical change and reflects the team’s strategy moving forward as they aim to regroup after a challenging series.

The decision to drop Rohit Sharma has sparked discussions among fans and analysts alike. While some view it as a necessary step given his recent form, others express concern over potential unrest within the team dynamics.

Reports of discord following India’s defeat in Melbourne have added to the scrutiny surrounding both Sharma’s leadership and performance.

As India prepares for this crucial encounter at SCG, all eyes will be on how they adapt without their captain and whether Bumrah can galvanize the team for a strong finish to the series.
