India’s cricket squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka has been officially announced, with significant changes in leadership roles for the T20I and ODI formats.
Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the captain for the three-match T20I series, taking over from Rohit Sharma, who recently announced his retirement from T20 internationals following India’s victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Suryakumar Yadav, known for his explosive batting style, has previously captained India in 7 T20Is, achieving a commendable record of five wins. He has scored over 2,300 runs in T20Is, including four centuries and 19 fifties, making him a formidable leader for the shorter format.
Rohit Sharma, however, will continue to lead the ODI squad, marking his return to captaincy after the team’s World Cup final defeat last year. Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain for both formats, reflecting his growing stature in the team.
The IND vs SL T20I series will begin on July 27, the second match scheduled for July 28 and the third on July 30. The IND vs SL ODI series will start on August 2. The second and third ODIs will be held on August 4 and 7, respectively.
This series will also mark the debut of Gautam Gambhir as India’s head coach, succeeding Rahul Dravid. Gambhir’s insights and strategies will be crucial as the team prepares for the upcoming matches.
