MS Dhoni CSK

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a former captain of India, is expected to conclude his career in cricket after the Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL). In August 2020, the seasoned keeper-batter retired from international cricket. He has, meanwhile, kept on playing for Chennai Super Kings, his IPL team (CSK). During the 2022 season, he gave up his position as team captain, but after Ravindra Jadeja had trouble, he took it back.

According to recent media reports, the Indian great will retire following the IPL season. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is eager to make use of his vast experience and tactical knowledge. To relieve some of the load on the Indian team’s current head coach Rahul Dravid, Dhoni might be invited to work with a specific group of players.

Given that Dhoni is already 41, it is a high possibility that he would leave the team after the 2023 IPL. Because the CSK team is close-knit, the management is likely to choose a new captain from among the current players.

A front-runner appears to be Ruturaj Gaikwad, who also captains Maharashtra. However, given that Dhoni’s shoes need to be replaced, they might also be eager to go with a well-known name. Know the 3 players who might be the potential target for the next CSK captain.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad is one of the players who is being prepared to succeed MS Dhoni as captain after his retirement. Gaikwad has been a standout performer for CSK lately and could serve as a long-term captaincy candidate. With 36 IPL games under his belt, the 25-year-old has scored 1207 runs at a respectable strike rate of 130.35. In the IPL, he has also scored one century and eleven fifties.

Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes, the legendary all-rounder for England, was a vital player in England’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia before shockingly retiring from ODI cricket earlier this year.

Stokes has an aura about him that makes him an inspirational figure because he believes in leading from the front. A case in point is how he has changed England’s Test results. As Dhoni’s replacement, CSK may be considering someone of Stokes’ calibre.

Kane Williamson

Once Dhoni leaves the IPL, the CSK team management may want to hire New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and give him the reins as captain. It should be noted that CSK has INR 20.45 crore available, therefore the Yellow Army may need to spend a sizeable sum to secure Williamson in the auction. Williamson’s participation in the yellow jersey throughout the upcoming season is uncertain.
