Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is set to return to competitive cricket after nearly a year-long hiatus.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) announced that Shami will feature in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh, starting on November 13, 2024, in Indore.

This marks a significant milestone for the veteran pacer, who has been sidelined since the 2023 ODI World Cup final due to an ankle injury.

    Shami’s Injury and Rehabilitation

Shami’s last appearance on the field was during the World Cup final against Australia on November 19, 2023.

Following this match, he suffered an Achilles tendon injury that required surgery in February 2024.

After undergoing the procedure, Shami faced a prolonged rehabilitation period at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Despite his efforts to regain fitness, he encountered setbacks, including knee swelling that delayed his return to action.

The CAB confirmed that Mohammed Shami has received the necessary clearance from the NCA to participate in the upcoming Ranji Trophy match.

Team coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla expressed optimism about Shami’s return, stating that he would join the Bengal squad in Indore shortly before the match.

    Importance of Shami’s Return

Shami’s comeback is not only crucial for Bengal but also for the Indian national team as they prepare for their upcoming tour of Australia.

With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy set to begin on November 22, Shami’s performance in the Ranji Trophy could significantly influence his selection for the Test series.

India’s bowling lineup is currently under scrutiny, especially after recent performances where they struggled against New Zealand.

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma have expressed relief at Shami’s return, viewing it as a boost to their bowling attack.

With pacers like Mohammed Siraj and newcomers such as Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna, having an experienced bowler like Shami can provide much-needed support.

    Expectations from the Upcoming Match

As Shami prepares to take the field against Madhya Pradesh, all eyes will be on his performance.

The match serves as a critical test of his fitness and form after a lengthy absence. A strong showing could pave the way for his inclusion in the Test squad for Australia, where India aims to improve its standing in the World Test Championship.

Shami himself has expressed confidence about his fitness levels, stating that he has been bowling at full intensity during practice sessions and feels ready for competitive cricket once again.

His experience and skill will be vital as Bengal aims to secure points in their Ranji Trophy campaign.
