Former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel is poised to take over as the new bowling coach of the Indian cricket team, according to multiple reports.
In addition to Morkel, other prominent names considered for Gautam Gambhir’s coaching staff include Abhishek Nayar, Ryan ten Doeschate, and Jonty Rhodes.
While the formalities are still being finalized, Morkel is expected to join the Indian team after the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.
Former India spinner Sairaj Bahutule will serve as the interim bowling coach for that series.
Here are 3 key reasons why Morne Morkel is the perfect choice to become India’s new bowling coach:
1. Successful IPL Coaching Experience with Gambhir
One of the primary reasons Morne Morkel stands out as a candidate is his successful partnership with Gautam Gambhir in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Morkel served as the bowling coach for the Lucknow Super Giants, where new India head coach Gautam Gambhir was the team mentor.
Their successful partnership in the IPL, which includes winning the title in 2014 when Gambhir was KKR’s captain and Morkel was a player, makes them a strong and proven coaching duo.
2. International Coaching Experience
Morne Morkel already has some international coaching experience under his belt. He previously served as the bowling coach for the Pakistan cricket team.
This experience of working with international cricketers and managing a national team setup will be invaluable as he transitions into the role with the Indian team.
Morkel’s international coaching experience means he is well-equipped to deal with the challenges of coaching a top-tier national team like India.
His insights and expertise can help elevate the performance of India’s bowling unit.
3. Expertise as a World-Class Fast Bowler
As a former world-class fast bowler himself, Morne Morkel brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table.
He played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is for South Africa, taking over 500 international wickets.
During his playing career, Morkel was known for his pace, bounce, and ability to generate movement off the pitch.
His expertise in these areas will be invaluable in mentoring India’s fast bowlers, helping them refine their skills and improve their performance.
