With the first Test against Australia approaching, scheduled to begin on November 22 at Perth’s Optus Stadium, uncertainty looms over the availability of Indian captain Rohit Sharma.
Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has indicated that if Rohit is unable to play, KL Rahul is poised to step in as an opener alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.k
Rohit Sharma’s Availability in Question
During a press conference before departing for Australia, Gambhir addressed the media regarding Rohit’s potential absence due to personal reasons.
He stated that there is currently no confirmation about Rohit sharma availability, emphasizing that updates will be provided as the series approaches.
“Hopefully, he’s going to be available, but everything we’re going to get to know at the start of the series,” Gambhir said.
Opening Options Under Consideration
If Rohit cannot participate in the Test match, Gambhir mentioned that both KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran are viable options for the opening slot.
Rahul has already traveled to Australia to play in an unofficial Test match with India A, where he struggled with scores of 4 and 10.
Easwaran also had a disappointing outing with scores of 0 and 17 in his recent appearances.
Gambhir noted, “There are options there; it’s not that there are no options. Once it gets closer to the first Test match, we’ll plan and play the best playing XI that’s going to do the job for us.” He highlighted that Shubman Gill could also be considered for the opening position.
Bumrah will be the captain
Jasprit Bumrah is set to take over as captain if Rohit will be unavialble. Gambhir confirmed this arrangement, stating that Bumrah is the vice-captain and would naturally step into the leadership role if needed.
Team Preparations and Expectations
As India prepares for this crucial five-match Test series against Australia, Gambhir expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to adapt to various conditions.
He dismissed concerns regarding pitch conditions in Australia, asserting that if the team plays to its potential, they can compete effectively regardless of the circumstances.
The upcoming series is not only a test of skill but also an opportunity for redemption after India’s recent struggles against New Zealand.
With Gambhir at the helm and a mix of experienced players and newcomers, India aims to make a strong statement in this high-stakes tour.
