In a bold and controversial statement, newly-appointed Australia women’s cricket team captain Alyssa Healy has warned India, cautioning against the preparation of spin-friendly wickets for their upcoming multi-series tour.
The Australian team is scheduled to face India in a one-off Test match, three T20Is, and as many ODIs during the anticipated tour.
Healy’s provocative remarks came in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, where she expressed keen interest in the kind of pitches India plans to prepare.
“I’m actually really intrigued to see as to what sort of wickets they prepare,” said Healy, setting the tone for what promises to be a competitive series.
“I think we’ve got a really, really good spin attack. So do that at your own peril. Don’t get me wrong, the Indians have got a strong spin attack as well.”
The Australian skipper didn’t hold back in highlighting her team’s spin prowess, particularly praising leg-spinner Ash Gardener, who showcased her brilliance by taking nine wickets on English soil.
Healy’s words underscore the confidence within the Australian camp regarding their ability to navigate and excel on spin-friendly surfaces.
“Prepare spinning wickets at your own demise,” Healy warned, sending a clear message that her team is well-prepared for the challenges that may come their way.
While acknowledging the strength of India’s spin bowlers, Healy emphasized the world-class leg-spin options at Australia’s disposal, including the likes of Ash Gardener, Jess Jonassen, Alan King, and Georgia Wareham.
The Australian squad’s composition adds weight to Healy’s statement, with four spinners included in the 16-player lineup, showcasing a strategic readiness for varied pitch conditions.
As discussions around pitch conditions intensify ahead of the series, Healy’s comments have added an extra layer of anticipation and intrigue to the contests between bat and ball.
Healy also shared her excitement about returning to Wankhede Stadium, the venue for the one-off Test, recalling her last experience during an IPL exhibition game a couple of years ago. “It will be interesting to see if they make it nice and flat,” she added, hinting at the potential tactical considerations in pitch preparation.
Despite her strong stance on the upcoming series, Healy briefly touched upon a personal setback that could have impacted her participation.
A freak injury, suffered while separating her two dogs, briefly put her availability in doubt. However, she reassured fans, stating, “Everything is going well. I started back in the nets over the last week and a half, so I’m on track to fly to India for a big series over there.”
