    Saim Ayub Recovery

Saim Ayub, the promising young opener for Pakistan, has been virtually ruled out of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a serious ankle injury sustained during a Test match in South Africa.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi provided a significant update on Ayub’s condition, emphasizing that the player’s long-term health is the priority.

    Injury Details

Saim Ayub suffered a fractured ankle on the first day of the second Test against South Africa earlier this month in Cape Town.

The injury occurred when he was fielding near the boundary line, leading to immediate concerns about his fitness for the Champions Trophy, which is set to take place from February 19 in Pakistan and Dubai.

    PCB Chairman’s Statement

In a recent press conference, Naqvi stated that Ayub is currently undergoing treatment in London and is in regular contact with his medical team.

“I am in touch with his doctors on a daily basis,” Naqvi said. He confirmed that Ayub’s ankle plaster is expected to come off in the next few days but cautioned that full recovery will take time.

“We are not going to risk his future career just for the Champions Trophy. He is our asset, and we want him fully fit, whatever time is required,” he added.

    Impact on Team Selection

The uncertainty surrounding Ayub’s fitness has delayed the announcement of Pakistan’s squad for the Champions Trophy.

Initially given a six-week recovery timeline, Ayub has been receiving check-ups from specialist sports injury orthopedic surgeons to monitor his rehabilitation process.

In light of his likely absence, selectors are considering Fakhar Zaman, who previously scored a century in the 2017 Champions Trophy final against India, as a potential replacement.

    Recent Form

Before his injury, Saim Ayub was in exceptional form, having scored two centuries during the ODI series against South Africa.

His performances had earned him a spot in the ICC’s ODI Team of the Year, highlighting his rapid rise in international cricket. His absence from the Champions Trophy would be a significant blow to Pakistan’s batting lineup as they aim for success in the tournament.
