Sanju Samson, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter and captain of the Rajasthan Royals, has suffered a fractured right index finger during the fifth T20I against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The injury occurred when he was struck by a delivery from England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer while attempting to hit a six.

Despite managing to score 16 runs off seven balls, Samson was unable to continue keeping wickets and was replaced by Dhruv Jurel after receiving medical attention on the field.

    Injury Details

According to reports, Samson’s injury is serious enough to sideline him for approximately five to six weeks, ruling him out of competitive cricket during this period.

This means he will miss the upcoming Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match for Kerala against Jammu & Kashmir scheduled from February 8-12.

A BCCI source confirmed that there is no chance of him participating in this match, emphasizing that his focus will be on recovery.

    Impact on IPL 2025

With just over a month remaining before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, concerns have arisen regarding Samson’s availability for the Rajasthan Royals.

However, sources indicate that he is expected to recover in time for the IPL. The team management is anxiously awaiting his return, as he has been a crucial player for the Royals in recent seasons, contributing significantly with both bat and gloves.

    Performance Context

Samson’s performance in the recently concluded T20I series against England was underwhelming, as he managed only 51 runs in five innings, struggling particularly against short-pitched deliveries.

His dismissal in the final match of the series added to a disappointing outing for him personally, as he faced challenges against England’s pace attack.

    Next Steps

After returning to Thiruvananthapuram for recovery, Samson will begin rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy once his finger heals sufficiently.

The Rajasthan Royals and their fans are hopeful that he will be fit and ready to lead the team when IPL 2025 kicks off.
