South Africa Set to Host Champions Trophy 2025

The future of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is hanging in the balance as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) faces pressure from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to accept a proposed hybrid model for hosting the tournament.

Initially scheduled to take place in Pakistan, the tournament’s fate may shift entirely to South Africa if the PCB rejects this model, which has been suggested in response to India’s refusal to play matches in Pakistan due to ongoing security concerns.

    Background of the Situation

The Champions Trophy is set to occur from February 19 to March 9, 2025, with matches planned in three Pakistani cities: Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially communicated its decision not to send the Indian team across the border, citing security threats and lack of government approval.

This refusal has put significant pressure on the PCB and raised questions about the viability of hosting the event entirely in Pakistan.

    The Proposed Hybrid Model

In light of India’s stance, the ICC has proposed a hybrid model where most matches would be held in Pakistan, but India’s games and potentially the final would take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

This arrangement aims to allow Pakistan to retain hosting rights while ensuring India’s participation. The ICC has assured the PCB that under this model, they would receive full hosting fees and be able to host a majority of the matches.

Despite these assurances, PCB officials have expressed a strong preference for hosting all matches within Pakistan. PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi has publicly stated that there have been no discussions regarding a hybrid model and that they are not willing to consider it at this time.

    Potential Shift to South Africa

If Pakistan ultimately rejects the hybrid proposal, sources indicate that the ICC may consider moving the entire tournament to South Africa.

This scenario is not unprecedented; South Africa previously hosted the Champions Trophy in 2009 after it was moved from Pakistan due to security concerns.

The ICC is reportedly exploring this option as a contingency plan to ensure that the tournament proceeds without disruption.

    What is the Next Step?

The ICC is currently awaiting a formal response from the PCB regarding their acceptance of the hybrid model. The coming weeks will be crucial as both parties navigate this complex situation.

If an agreement cannot be reached, South Africa may emerge as a new host for the Champions Trophy 2025, ensuring that cricket fans can still enjoy this prestigious tournament despite ongoing geopolitical challenges.
