T20 WC 2022: IPL Has Changed My Cricket, And Helped Me Evolve: Marcus Stoinis

Marcus Stoinis IPL

One of Marcus Stoinis’ record-breaking half-century against Sri Lanka is eye catchy for all cricket fans. Stoinis, an all-rounder for Australia, has praised the IPL for his improvement as a cricketer, particularly a change in his mindset toward spinners that was evident in this T20 World Cup match against Sri Lanka.

After a terrible start to their World Cup campaign, Stoinis (59 not out off 18), who is typically hesitant against spin, destroyed the Sri Lankan spin pair of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana to give the reigning champions a seven-wicket victory.

IPL has coaches from all over the world

“Yeah, definitely the IPL has changed my cricket and helped me evolve,” said Stoinis in the post-match press conference on Tuesday (October 25).

“And it’s not only playing on the wickets, it’s having the coaches from all over the world, having players from different countries. I’ve played for quite a few years in the IPL and quite a few teams, so you come across a range of techniques and mentalities about how to play spin. Yeah, it has helped me improve for sure.”

In spite of setting a new record for the fastest T20I fifty by an Australian that night, Stoinis admitted that he didn’t feel at all assured when he stepped out to the middle. Ironically, his innings got off to a fast start with a boundary and a pair of runs, both against Chamika Karunaratne.

“I was actually quite nervous, to be honest, so yeah, the intention was just to go put an impact on the game and probably provide a bit of energy for the boys and try and get a spark going.”
