T20 World Cup 2024: Can Pakistan Qualify For Super 8 After Loss To India?

Date:

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign took a hit with their recent six-run loss to India in New York. This defeat has left their chances of qualifying for the Super 8 hanging by a thread.

Pakistan’s batting collapse during the chase of a modest 120-run target set by an underperforming Indian batting lineup raised questions about their strategy and performance under pressure.

With two losses in two matches, Pakistan’s road to the Super 8 has become exceedingly challenging. Their fate is no longer entirely in their hands, and they must not only win their remaining games but also rely on other results to go their way.

T20 World Cup 2024: Group A Current Scenario

In their group, India is set to advance regardless of their remaining matches. This leaves just one spot up for grabs, with the USA and Pakistan fighting for it.

Pakistan must now secure victories in their remaining group matches against Canada and Ireland. Additionally, they need India to win both their remaining fixtures and Ireland to defeat the USA.

How Pakistan Can Still Qualify For Super 8?

If all five results align with this scenario, Pakistan will have four points from four matches, while India will accumulate eight points. The USA will finish their group-stage campaign with the same points as Pakistan, while Canada and Ireland will each have two points.

In this situation, India will directly qualify for the Super Eight, while both Pakistan and the USA will end up with four points each. The Net Run Rate (NRR) will then become the deciding factor. Pakistan must secure big-margin wins in their remaining matches to boost their NRR, which could be crucial in a tiebreaker situation.

Pakistan faces a tough road ahead, but they have shown resilience in the past. In the T20 World Cup 2022, they overcame the same situation after being defeated by Zimbabwe and still made it to the final. This experience should give them confidence that they can turn their campaign around.
