The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that all-rounder Tanush Kotian will join the Indian team for the upcoming fourth and fifth Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
The first of these matches, the Boxing Day Test, is set to take place at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on December 26, 2024.
This decision comes as a response to the retirement of veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who recently concluded his international career following the third Test at the Gabba in Brisbane.
Kotian’s Impressive Domestic Record
At just 26 years old, Tanush Kotian has made a notable impact in domestic cricket. Over his career, he has played 33 first-class matches, taking 101 wickets at an impressive average of 25.70, which includes three five-wicket hauls.
He has accumulated 1,525 runs with the bat, featuring two centuries and 13 half-centuries. His standout performance during the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season was particularly remarkable; he claimed 29 wickets at an average of 16.96 and scored 502 runs, earning him the title of Player of the Tournament.
Recent Experience in Australia
Before his selection for the national team, Kotian was part of the India A squad that toured Australia. He played a first-class match against Australia A at the MCG, gaining invaluable experience on Australian pitches.
His inclusion in the national squad is viewed as a strategic move to strengthen India’s spin options alongside established players like Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar.
With Ashwin’s departure leaving a significant gap in the spin department, Kotian’s versatility as an all-rounder is expected to be beneficial.
Next Steps for Kotian
Currently participating in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Ahmedabad, Kotian is set to depart for Australia shortly.
He expressed his excitement about joining the national squad and stated, “I am very happy; I will be getting more details soon but will be joining the squad.” His addition comes at a crucial time as India aims to secure a series victory against Australia, which is currently tied at 1-1 after three Tests.
India’s Squad Composition
The Indian squad for the upcoming Tests features prominent players such as captain Rohit Sharma, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah, and star batsman Virat Kohli, alongside Tanush Kotian.
The team will leverage their batting depth and spin bowling capabilities as they prepare for these critical matches at MCG and Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
With Kotian’s inclusion, India’s chances of success in this highly competitive series have received a significant boost.
