Virat Kohli is reportedly set to play county cricket in England as part of his preparations for the upcoming Test series against England, which begins on June 20, 2025.

This decision comes after a challenging period for the former Indian captain, who has faced criticism for his recent performances, particularly during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, where he struggled with his batting technique.

    Context of the Decision

Kohli’s participation in county cricket is seen as a strategic move to regain form and confidence ahead of the critical Test series.

His recent statistics reflect a decline in performance; he managed only 190 runs at an average of 23.75 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, raising concerns about his ability to handle deliveries outside off stump.

Playing in the County Championship would provide him with valuable experience in English conditions, which are known to be challenging for visiting batsmen.

    Timeline and Challenges

The timeline for Kohli’s county cricket participation hinges on the IPL 2025 season. The IPL is scheduled to start on March 14, 2025, and run until the final on May 25, 2025.

The County Championship begins its first leg on April 4, 2025, and runs until May 26, with a second leg starting on June 22.

This scheduling poses a significant challenge: if Kohli’s team, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), advances to the playoffs, it would limit his opportunity to play county cricket.

Reports suggest that if RCB does not qualify for the playoffs, Kohli could have around two weeks to acclimatize to English conditions before the Test series begins.

However, if RCB reaches the final, he would have minimal time—less than two weeks—to adjust before facing England.

    Expert Opinions

Former cricketers and analysts have weighed in on Kohli’s situation. Gautam Gambhir, India’s head coach, has emphasized the importance of playing domestic cricket to prepare for international challenges.

Many believe that participating in county cricket could help Kohli refine his skills and rebuild his confidence after a rough patch.

    The Stakes for Kohli

Kohli’s future in Test cricket has come under scrutiny due to his recent form.

His average has dipped significantly since 2021, and there are calls from fans and experts alike for him to consider playing in domestic leagues like the Ranji Trophy or county cricket to regain his touch.

With the Test series against England being pivotal for his career trajectory, Kohli’s decision to pursue county cricket could be crucial.
