Will Mohammad Shami be included in Australia and South Africa series after Asia Cup 2022?

Mohammad Shami

Over the years, Mohammad Shami has proven to be a match-winner for India and has been India’s go-to fast bowler alongside Jasprit Bumrah.

However, he was not included in the Asia Cup squad of India by the selectors and this triggered divided opinions. The Indian team selectors preferred the young duo of Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh and Shami was left out.

The pacer who plays for Bengal in the domestic circuit, last played a T20I match for India in the ICC T20I World Cup 2021. He had a good season with Gujarat Titans where he bagged 20 wickets. His team eventually went on to lift the Indian Premier League (IPL) title.

Former Indian cricketer Madan Lal feels that Shami should have been included in India’s side for the Asia Cup. He also feels that the selectors should select him for the ICC T20I World Cup 2022. The World Cup will be held in the seam-friendly Australian conditions.

“Shami should definitely be in the team for the T20 World Cup. He’s our best bowler after Bumrah. I would look for a bowler who could get me wickets. I don’t want bowlers who would only look to contain runs. Batters will keep scoring runs in this format. The only way to stem the flow of runs is to take wickets,” said Madan Lal in an exclusive conversation with SportsKeeda

Shami should be included in the Australia and South Africa T20I series post Asia Cup 2022

India will be playing two home T20I series against Australia and South Africa before the ICC T20I World Cup. We strongly feel that Mohammad Shami should be included in the side as his expertise could well be the X-factor for India. With Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness being under the scanner, the Indian pace-bowling department would need experience.

Avesh Khan has not been at his best in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 and has leaked runs heavily in the death overs. Shami might replace Avesh in the squad.

Australia’s tour of India for the 3 T20Is commence from 20th September. The final T20I will be played on the 25th of September. India then host South Africa for 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs which will take place from 28th September to 11th October.
