WPL 2023 Auction: Female Auctioneer, Guidelines, Bidding Process, Latest Updates, Details Here

Date:

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made sure that at least some women are present at the WPL 2023 auction, even though the WPL is not a women-only event. Malika Advani has been chosen by BCCI to serve as the auctioneer for the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) Auction in place of Hugh Edmeades.

Malika is a modern and contemporary Indian art expert headquartered in Mumbai. She will supervise the WPL 2023 auctions that will take place at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai on February 13. Malika’s appointment has been communicated to the five WPL teams.

The Women’s Premier League also becomes the first of its kind because players are selected using an auction mechanism rather than the draft-based systems used by the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and Women’s Super Smash (New Zealand).

The JIO World Convention Center’s Jasmine Hall, 1, will host the WPL 2023 auction, which will begin at 2.30 PM. On Sunday at 8 p.m., the BCCI will have a pre-auction briefing for the franchisees (February 12).

WPL 2023 Auction Guidelines

The BCCI has also informed the franchises that each squad must have a minimum of 15 players and an investment of INR 9 crore. Each side may only purchase six foreign players out of a total sum of INR 12 crore.

Says the BCCI communication, “The franchisees are reminded of the WPL squad rules with respect to a minimum (15) and maximum (18) squad size, minimum squad spends (INR 9 crore), and the maximum number of overseas players in the squad (6).”

A total of 409 players, including 246 Indians and 163 foreign players, eight of whom are from partner nations, will be auctioned off. In accordance with their areas of expertise, the players will be divided into sets, including marquee players, hitters, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, fast bowlers, spin bowlers, and emerging players.

There are five distinct base price slabs available to players in the auction register: INR 50 lakh, INR 40 lakh, INR 30 lakh, INR 20 lakh, and INR 10 lakh, with 24 players electing to be placed in the top bracket.

WPL 2023 Bidding process

The bidding increments will be as follows:

  • bids up to INR 1 crore: increments of INR 5 lakh
  • bids from INR 1 crore to INR 2 crore: increments of INR 10 lakh
  • bids from INR 2 crore to INR 3 crore: increments of INR 20 lakh
  • bids from INR 3 crore: increments at the auctioneer’s discretion, but not less than INR 20 lakh

Breaks during WPL 2023 Auction Live

During the auction, the BCCI is also offering strategic breaks every hour. The franchises will get 10-minute breaks every 10 minutes to reassess their strategies.

“Following the conclusion of each set, there may (at the Auctioneer’s discretion) be a short break to allow franchises time to re-evaluate tactics. The length of each break will be announced by the Auctioneer at the conclusion of the relevant set. A warning bell will ring two minutes before the resumption of the Player Auction after each break. The Player Auction will restart promptly after each break. It is anticipated that these short breaks will total a minimum of 10 minutes in every hour of the Player Auction proceedings,” the BCCI note says.
