The Capri Global Holdings-owned Women’s Premier League (WPL) team based in Lucknow will be known as the ‘UP Warriorz.’ The UP Warriorz, one of the five teams in the highly awaited 2023 Women’s Premier League, became a reality after Capri Global Holdings Private Limited won the offer for the Lucknow-based franchise at an auction held by the BCCI for INR 757 Crores.
The WPL 2023 team Warriorz have also focused on their think tank, with Anju Jain, a 2005 holder of the Arjuna Award, serving as the team’s assistant coach and former England cricketer Jon Lewis serving as the team’s head coach. The bowling coach is former Australian cricketer Ashley Noffke. In the meantime, Australia’s Lisa Sthalekar, a four-time world champion, will serve as the UP Warriorz’s mentor.
Expecting this to be a fascinating insight
Lewis, the current England Women’s Cricket Team head coach, has a wealth of experience and has taken more than 1200 wickets in more than 500 games, both internationally and domestically. Additionally, he played for England in two T20Is, 13 ODIs, and a Test.
Lewis, who is well-known in the English county circuit, served as the bowling coach for the England Men’s Team in 2021. During his time there, he worked with a select group of bowlers, including Ben Stokes, Mark Wood, and Jofra Archer.
“I am delighted to be part of the Capri Global Holdings Private Limited family with the UP Warriorz and expect this to be a fascinating insight into the depth of cricket in India and a high-octane ride for the next couple of months. The WPL is a huge step forward for women’s cricket globally and I am excited to be an integral part of this journey. Having Anju Jain, Ashley Noffke and Lisa Sthalekar who bring in a diverse set of experiences to the dugout can only make the task a whole lot easier” Lewis said.
UP Warriorz’s logo for WPL
The UP Warriorz logo is made up of four primary parts: a shield to hold it all together, a sword inspired by the motion of the Sarus crane, and wings that expand out like the sun in the morning. The most important component is the sarus crane, which is the highest flying bird in the world and the state bird of Uttar Pradesh. It serves as a symbol for movement, grace, balance, and attaining new heights.
