Today in Mumbai is the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023’s first-ever auction held. When entering the Jio World Centre, the five franchises—Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Capitals (DC), Gujarat Giants (GG), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and UP Warriorz (UPW)—had their thinking caps on.
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 auction was held, ushering in a new chapter in the history of women’s cricket when a total of 409 players will be put up for sale during the players’ auction for the WPL’s first season in Mumbai.
Mumbai will host the WPL 2023 from March 4 to March 26. The main competition will be held at the Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium, where a total of 22 games will be contested. Initial registration for the WPL player auction included 1525 players in total, but only 409 players made the cut.
At the player auction, each side would have a budget of Rs 12 crore and be required to purchase a minimum of 15 players, a maximum of 18, and 30 players from abroad. As per the latest WPL 2023 auction top buy, Smriti Mandhana sold for Rs. 3.4 crore, Ashleigh Gardner and Natalie Sciver sold for 3.2 crores.
