HBO has officially announced that The Last of Us has been successfully renewed for Season 2. This move was forseeable as it comes after a premiere that drew 22 million viewers and rapidly went viral on social media.

The Last of Us on HBO is a remarkable adaptation that will delight both fans of the game as well as those who are completely unaware with the video game background.  The happenings of the 2013 video game with the same name are covered in the first season of HBO’s The Last of Us.

After the news broke, executive producer and Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann stated in a tweet that the second season will be built on The Last of Us: Part 2 game, much like the first season was based on The Last of Us.

HBO’s press release stated that The Last of Us’ premiere was the second-biggest series launch for the network, the first being the House of the Dragon’s debut. They also stated that the show’s viewership increased by more than 20% for the second episode.

At 9 p.m. EST on Sunday, HBO and HBO Max will debut “Long Long Time,” the third episode of The Last of Us. Even though The Last of Us had just two episodes broadcast, there were already rumours about a second season. these rumours were driven by actor Bella Ramsey who stated that a renewal was probable provided viewership remained strong. The network reportedly decided to lock in a second season after Episode 2 garnered 22% more viewers on its debut night than Episode 1. This is the highest week two audience rise for any HBO original drama ever.

The Last of Us Season 2

“I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast and crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with Season 2! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog and PlayStation, thank you.” said Druckmann.

Executive producer Craig Mazin said: “I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership. I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The audience has given us the chance to continue. As a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.”

In an effort to increase interest in HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, the first episode of the title was posted for free on YouTube before the reveal of Season 2. The programme has mostly stayed true to the first PlayStation game. However, it has also not backed away from shaking things up when required. On January 29, Episode 3 will show viewers how the tale of Joel and Ellie develops.

There is also a possibility of a third season. Mazin has already stated that the game sequel would require more than one season to be covered in a TV adaptation.
