Real Madrid outclassed Atletico Madrid in an absolute goal-fest in the 1st semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup on 11th January 2024 at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti and co. have now progressed to the finals of this competition.
This match proved to be an absolute humdinger right from the word go and brought in so much happiness into the lives of Real Madrid supporters and fans. After Mario Hermoso had scored a goal for Atletico Madrid, Antonio Rudiger had neutralised Atletico’s lead via a goal in the 20th minute of the match.
Ferland Mendy then took the lead for Real Madrid before Antoine Griezmann scored a fabulous goal to bring the game to a level ground. The scoreline at the end of a high-scoring first half was 2-2.
“It was a back-and-forth match. They did well in the first half and in the second we were able to improve. Both teams played very well. It was a spectacular match, we won because we had a bit more energy in the end,” said Carlo Ancelotti at the end of this electrifying game.
With his goal in the 1st half, Antoine Griezmann became the all-time highest goal-scorer of Atletico Madrid with 174 goals. He broke the record of Luis Aragones, who had 173 goals scored for Atletico Madrid in 370 matches.

At the end of an eventful first half, both the teams were charged and pumped to seal the deal in this exciting semi-final game. Dani Carvajal had staged a fantastic comeback goal after Antonio Rudiger’s own goal had put Atletico Madrid, ahead in this game.
Post the regulation time and injury time, the match slipped into the extra time, where Real Madrid were simply outstanding. They applied a lot of pressure on Atletico Madrid and netted 2 goals in this process.
While Dani Carvajal scored the first goal, the other goal was scored by Brahim Diaz and it sealed the deal for the Los Blancos at their home stadium. The entire stadium was reverberating with Real Madrid chants and it was a sight to behold.
Brahim Diaz was flashed a yellow card for taking his shirt off during his celebrations after the 2nd goal in the extra time. Interestingly, every Madrid Derby since 1974 has had the instance of a yellow card being given.
Real Madrid have advanced to the finals of the Super Cup and will be facing the winners of Barcelona and Osasuna. The two teams will be crossing swords with each other in the 2nd semi-final on 12th January 2024.
