The 132nd edition of the Durand Cup is all set to start from the first week of August 2023. It is one of the most iconic and prestigious football tournaments of not just India, but the entire world.
Durand Cup 2022 was won by Bengaluru FC, after they defeated Mumbai City FC. What is so special about this edition of the tournament is that foreign teams will be back to playing in this league after a long hiatus.
The tournament is back with an international flair and it promises to ooze action and entertainment, amidst exuding a lot of class. Foreign teams will be part of this league after 27 years and it is indeed, a very prestigious moment for the second-oldest football tournament in the world.
A total of 24 teams will be taking part in the Durand Cup 2023. 21 teams will be Indian and 3 foreign teams have been invited. Durand Cup is organised by the Indian Armed Forces as it was initially started in the 19th century by the Britishers ruling in India, for the armed forces.
From 1940, the tournament was shifted to New Delhi from Shimla and it has then been open for all civilians to play.
The foreign teams which will be taking part in this tournament are Bangladesh Services, Bhutan Services and Nepal Services. A tinge of international flair to this tournament will increase the competition levels and there will be a surge in the viewership as well.
Matches of Durand Cup 2023 will be taking place in Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong and Kokrajhar. All the matches will be played between the first week of August to the first week of September.
