France football team’s Oliver Giroud overtook Thierry Henry to become France’s leading goal-scorer of all time. In his 117th match for France, Giroud netted a goal and his tally reached up to 52 goals.
Having made his debut for the national team way back in 2011, Oliver Giroud was all over the moon as he became his nation’s highest goal-scorer ever. The AC Milan striker is one of the best strikers of contemporary times but is also severely underrated.
France beat Poland 3-1 in the Round of 16 of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 after Kylian Mbappe netted a brace and Oliver Giroud scored 1 goal for the Les Bleus. France will now play England in the quarter-finals and the match will take place on 11th December 2022.
“Olivier has always been an important player. Even if four years ago with the title he didn’t score – he was always important. He has had difficult periods. Today he is rewarded because he has often been criticized. It is not just any old record… beyond it being Thierry Henry he has beaten.
To score so many international goals – he was there before I even became a coach so bravo to him and to his teammates who have helped him score so many goals,” said Didier Deschamps, who is the head coach of France.
Oliver Giroud took over Thierry Henry’s record
After scoring twice against Australia, Oliver Giroud had equaled the record of former French footballer Thierry Henry. But it was in this game against Poland that Giroud reached this landmark milestone and shut all his critics.
Thierry Henry played 123 matches for the France football team and netted 51 goals. Henry played between 1997 and 2010 for Les Bleus.
The defending champions of the FIFA World Cup would be hoping to get one over England and advance to the semi-finals of this prestigious tournament in Qatar.
