India’s next international assignment in football is the second round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers against Afghanistan. The Blue Tigers are slotted in Group A and are presently in the 3rd position in the group standings.
After winning their first game against Kuwait, India had received a 0-3 drubbing at the hands of Qatar in their first game in the Qualifiers in November 2023.
This game against Afghanistan becomes extremely important for Igor Stimac and co. if they are to progress to the next round of the Qualifiers.
India have to finish in the top two rankings in Group A in the second round if they are to qualify to the third round. If India fails to finish in the top two in the second round, it would pave the way for their exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers.
In the third round, if India can secure a top-two finish, then they will be eligible for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Upon finishing third or fourth, India can enter into the fourth round for further competition for a spot in the marquee footballing event in the world.
Sunil Chhetri and co. had gone through a torrid campaign in the AFC Asian Cup 2023. They were blanked in all the matches and this was a big slap to their reputation as well.
This is now a golden opportunity for the Indian football team to stage a comeback and turn the entire odds around.
India have already left for Saudi Arabia for their 1st game against Afghanistan on 22nd March 2024. The match is slated to begin from 12:30 AM (IST) and will be played at the Damac Stadium in Saudi Arabia.
The next game against Afghanistan will be played on 26th March and it will be played at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati.
