Goalkeepers in a game of football are undisputedly one of the most important cogs in a football team. They do the hardest job in the team and are responsible for preventing the onslaught of opposition team strikers and midfielders.

In the Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23 too, we have witnessed some stunning saves and some impeccable goalkeepers.

Clean sheets happen in football when a goalkeeper does not concede a goal in the game. The feeling which a striker or a midfielder gets when they score a goal is the same feeling which a goalkeeper gets when they have a clean sheet.

As we boil down towards the end of ISL 2022-23, we ought to give the keepers a lot of credit for their phenomenal job in the tournament. In this article, we take a look at a few goalkeepers with the most clean sheets in ISL 2022-23:

1. Vishal Kaith (ATK Mohun Bagan)

One of the safest pairs of hands in ISL 2022-23 was ATK Mohun Bagan’s goalkeeper, Vishal Kaith. The 26-year-old goalkeeper is one of the main reasons why the Mariners have qualified for the semi-finals of ISL 2022-23. He has so far registered 10 clean sheets in the tournament, including a clean sheet in the knockout game against Odisha FC.

2. Phurba Lachenpa (Mumbai City FC)

When Phurba Lachenpa was included as the goalkeeper of Mumbai City FC in the Durand Cup 2022, the custodian had grabbed the opportunity with both hands. And he continued his stellar form in the ISL 2022-23 as well, logging 7 clean sheets so far. Lachenpa helped the Islanders win the ISL League Shield with his stupendous keeping skills within the two sticks.

3. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (Bengaluru FC)

One of the main reasons why Bengaluru FC have been able to display such a formidable vein of form in 2023 is Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s mind-boggling presence of mind in the goalkeeping position.

Bengaluru FC have been unbeaten in their last 10 games and it looks like they are a strong contender for the ISL trophy. Sandhu too has notched up 7 clean sheets so far.

After Laxmikant Kattimani was ruled out of ISL 2022-23 for an injury, the onus fell on Gurmeet Singh. He has so far done a decent job in the games he has played in and has registered 5 clean sheets in ISL 2022-23. Gurmeet Singh’s acrobatic skills at the goalpost has been quite noteworthy and has earned him a lot of plaudits.

Another Indian who played in a terrific fashion in ISL 2022-23 was Kerala Blasters’ goalkeeper, Prabhsukhan Gill. The young 22-year-old goalkeeper from Ludhiana soaked in all the pressure and displayed good keeping skills in front of the goal.

Mind you, it is never easy to keep between the sticks in front of an energetic and enthusiastic crowd like the Kerala crowd.
