In the first game against Myanmar, Anirudh Thapa slotted home the goal to give India the win. After that, India defeated Kyrgyzstan 2-0 on the back of goals from Sunil Chhetri and Sandesh Jhingan.
Only Lebanon are higher than India in FIFA rankings in this tournament. Head Coach Igor Stimac has said that he will be using these games for India’s preparations ahead of the coveted AFC Asian Cup 2023, which will be taking place in January 2024.
“I’ll try to use these upcoming games in the best way to prepare for the Asian Cup. These games will serve as a challenge for our players to prove their ability at the international level, even though the opponents are not the ones we’ll face in the Asian Cup,” said Igor Stimac.
“But they’re good and competitive. Mongolia are very competitive, and aggressive and have so many youngsters in midfield and upfront. They play an aggressive style of football with a high press and counter-attacking football, so no games are easy. Each game is a great challenge for any of our players who are here to prove that they deserve their position in the national team,” Stimac added.
With a FIFA ranking of 183, Mongolia are not a side that is a pushover. Their last international assignment was against Georgia. They were steamrolled past by the Crusaders and the eventual score-line was 6-1 in favour of Georgia.
