Croatia suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Argentina in their semi-final game as they are now out of the reckoning for the World Cup trophy in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. Luka Modric, who is a Croatian maverick and one of the best midfielders of contemporary times, was quite disappointed with the referee after a controversial penalty decision.

Around the 30th minute, a controversial penalty was awarded to Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Luka Modric lashed out at the referee in the post-match interview for that decision. He labeled the referee as a ‘disaster’.

“Argentina was a fair winner of the match, they were better, and they deserved to win, but these things have to be mentioned, I generally don’t do them, but today they have to be done,” said the Croatian captain Luka Modric.

Luka Modric labeled the referee as a ‘disaster’

”We had a good time on the pitch until the penalty, which for me wasn’t there, because he (Julian Alvarez) shoots and hits our goalkeeper. Usually, I don’t like to talk about referees, but this is one of the worst. I don’t have a good memory of [Orsato], he’s a disaster. For me it wasn’t a penalty,” Modric added.

Julian Alvarez scored a brace and the talismanic 35-year-old striker Lionel Messi scored 1 goal as Argentina reached their 6th FIFA World Cup final. They will now be facing the winner of France vs Morocco clash on Sunday. A win on Sunday would help the La Albiceleste to lift their 3rd FIFA World Cup title.

Croatia on the other hand needs to re-group quickly and play in the 3rd place match. They will be facing the loser of France vs Morocco clash on Saturday. It might be Luka Modric’s last game on the international stage as the iconic midfielder might call it quits from international football.
