Sunil Chhetri disappointed

The Indian Super League (ISL) has begun its proceedings in the most supreme fashion and has already witnessed some amazing clashes between the 11 participating teams. ISL 2022-23 has seen the teams play amidst crowds, which was missing in the last two editions. Some trends have been witnessed in the league and we will be discussing about them in this article.

The bio-bubble is not present anymore in the marquee ISL 2022-23 league and the players and support staff have the liberty of visiting different places. This obviously has a psychological impact as players can relax and de-stress ahead of their matches. Cooling period is extremely important in sport and this ISL has allowed that.

The ISL 2022-23 has seen several exciting matches unfold. Several highs and several lows have been registered in ISL 2022-23 and today we speak about 5 setbacks so far in the league:

1. East Bengal FC lose their 5th straight ISL derby

The onus was on Stephen Constantine’s Red and Gold Brigade to better their dubious Derby record ahead of their game, last night. However, a 0-2 loss at the hands of the Mariners further took their record to a slump. Even though East Bengal FC performed well in the Derby and were quite competitive, they just could not get the better off their neighbours.

2. Last season’s runners-up Kerala Blasters haven’t found form yet

When the ISL 2022-23 season started, Kerala Blasters FC registered a thumping 3-1 victory against East Bengal FC. However, the tide quickly tuned as the Yellow Army suffered three straight losses after that. The defence has gone for a toss and their strikers have failed to bring glory to their side. This is a stark contrast to their campaign last season, when they finished as runners-up.

3. Sunil Chhetri has not scored yet in ISL 2022-23

The captain of the Indian football team and Bengaluru FC, the legendary striker Sunil Chhetri is yet to hit the ground running in ISL 2022-23. The likes of Sivasakhti Narayanan and Roy Krishna have impressed for the Blues but their skipper is yet to fire. If Sunil Chhetri finds form, then Bengaluru FC would be extremely settled with their plans.

4. ISL 2021-22 League Shield Winners Struggle in ISL 2022-23

Jamshedpur FC had recorded only 3 losses in ISL 2021-22 and they finished as the table-toppers. This handed them the coveted ISL League Shield award. However, in ISL 2022-23, Aidy Boothroyd’s Jamshedpur FC is yet to fire as per their potential. They are yet to win their first game in ISL 2022-23 and are struggling at the bottom of the table.

5. NorthEast United FC’s misery continues

The Highlanders started the season as the underdogs and they have not been able to impress in the tournament. They already are languishing at the bottom of the table with 3 losses and look extremely unsettled. They had a massive loss in their previous game at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati. East Bengal FC had won the game 3-1 and had further pushed the Highlanders to danger waters.
