Kylian Mbappe and his former club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are in a major dispute regarding unpaid wages, which has escalated into a legal confrontation.
The Real Madrid star claims that PSG owes him approximately $60.6 million in wages, a figure the club disputes, asserting that he agreed to waive this amount in August 2023.
What is Mbappe’s pay dispute with PSG?
The conflict traces back to Mbappe’s decision not to extend his contract with PSG, which led to tensions between the player and the club.
After declining to sign an extension, Mbappe was initially sidelined from the team but was later reinstated following discussions with club officials.
Reports indicated that he had consented to forfeit certain loyalty bonuses if he left PSG as a free agent.
However, he now argues that he is owed money related to an unpaid signing bonus, salary for the last three months of his contract, and an ‘ethical bonus’ for that period.
Legal Developments
On September 12, 2024, the French league’s legal commission ruled in favor of Kylian Mbappe, ordering PSG to pay him €55 million (approximately $61 million) in unpaid wages.
Following this ruling, PSG expressed its intention to contest the decision in a different legal forum, emphasizing that the player had made commitments that should be honored.
The club pointed out that Mbappe had received significant benefits during his tenure, which they believe should be taken into account.
Mediation Attempts
In a recent meeting, Mbappe’s representatives rejected a mediation offer from the
French league’s legal committee, arguing that mediation would not effectively resolve the payment dispute.
PSG, however, has expressed support for mediation, insisting that it has been seeking this resolution for several months.
Mbappe’s Legacy at PSG
Kylian Mbappe, born in Paris, rose to prominence at PSG after transferring from Monaco in 2018 for a record fee.
Over his seven-year stint, he became the club’s all-time top scorer, winning multiple league titles and individual accolades. His departure from PSG, marked by tensions and unmet expectations, has left a complex legacy.
