Manchester United completed a dominant 3-0 win over West Ham on 4th February 2024. Amidst the pomp and celebrations, the Red Devils suffered a big blow as one of their key defenders in the form of Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for 2 months because of a knee injury.
He had a collision with West Ham player Vladimir Coufal and he was forced to leave the field in the 2nd half. Notably, Martinez had returned from a long injury halt in January and is now back in the sidelines again.
Martinez did try to play on the field in the 2nd half post this injury but had to trudge off the field and was replaced.
Manchester United released a statement regarding his injury and wished the Argentine defender, a speedy recovery.
“Lisandro Martinez has sustained an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his knee and is expected to be out of action for at least eight weeks. The Argentine defender left the field in the 71st minute of our 3-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday. We all wish Licha a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch later in the season,” said Manchester United.
Lisandro Martinez’s inclusion back in the side after his injury period worked in favour for the 13-time Premier League winners. He staged a comeback on 14th January 2024 when Manchester United had a 2-2 draw versus Tottenham Hotspurs.
Post that, United won 3 more games and the 26-year-old defender played a crucial role in the backline for Manchester United.
Manchester United’s manager Erik Ten Hag issued a worrying update about the FIFA World Cup 2022 winner.
“It seems bad, we have to wait and make the right diagnosis. In this moment we are very sad, hopefully it is not too bad but we can only pray. It looks like he has to sit some games out injured again,” said Ten Hag.
