After a successful campaign in the Hero Intercontinental Cup 2023 where India outclassed Lebanon in the finals 2-0 to lift the silverware, India will be shifting their focus to the SAFF Championship 2023.
In the opening game of the tournament, Kuwait will be locking horns with Nepal. The match will be taking place at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru and is slated to begin from 3:30 PM (IST).
India will be playing their first game against arch-rivals Pakistan on 21st June 2023, starting from 7:30 PM (IST). The match will be taking place at the same venue at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.
This is the 14th edition of the SAFF Championship 2023 and it will witness 8 teams in the form of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Kuwait, Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh and Lebanon locking horns with each other.
Sunil Chhetri and co. are the most successful side and have won the tournament on 8 occasions. They are also the defending champions and would be gunning for their 9th title.
When the tournament took place in Maldives in 2021, Sunil Chhetri’s Indian football team emerged victorious after they defeated Nepal 3-0 in the finals. Sunil Chhetri, Suresh Singh Wangjam and Sahal Abdul Samad had netted the goals for the Indian football team.
Skipper Sunil Chhetri finished as the leading goal-scorer in the tournament, after he netted 5 goals. He is also India’s leading goal-scorer of all time, having scored 87 goals in 137 games. Chhetri had made his debut against Pakistan way back in 2005.
