Embattled football player Mason Greenwood’s La Liga debut was marred with a big controversy as Osasuna fans were heard yelling out chants for Mason to die. The away team crowd at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez Stadium were extremely hostile at the English footballer during this match.
Playing his first competitive game since his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape and assault of his girlfriend, Harriet Robson. He was free of the charges levied against him in February 2023 but continued to be in the line of fire from the public.
On the final day of the transfer window, the former club of Mason Greenwood, Manchester United, loaned him to Spanish side, Getafe. And Greenwood made an impactful debut at the Coliseum as he helped his side eke out a 3-2 victory against Osasuna.
The presence of Mason Greenwood on the football field infused motivation and hope for Getafe. His speed and agility was on display during his debut and the Getafe fans promptly defended their player when the away team fans were hurling out inappropriate chants.
In the 85th minute of the game, Getafe scored the winning goal through a corner. Nemanja Maksimovic had netted the goal and it meant that Greenwood had shone on his debut for Getafe.
Getafe coach, Jose Bordalas, heaped praise on Mason Greenwood following his sensational debut for the Spanish side.
“We’re pleasantly surprised by him. Today was a difficult game that was very back and forth. He helped us in attack and in defence too. He showed solidarity with his team, and he surprised us [physically]. We are still working with him, as he has gone many months without playing. We will take this calmly. I imagine today will have been special for him and he will have the satisfaction of feeling like a footballer again. What a footballer wants is to compete, to play,” said Jose Bordalas.
Getafe had won the game 3-2
Following goals from Stefan Mitrovic, Jose Angel Carmona and Nemanja Maksimovic, Getafe registered a 3-2 victory in this La Liga 2023-24 game versus Osasuna. Getafe are presently in the 9th position in the points table of this competition with 7 points under their belt in 5 matches.
The win over Osasuna was only the side’s 2nd victory in this edition of the competition. The addition of the Manchester United loanee has been a bright and positive move for the club. And it was displayed in the game on 17th September 2023.
