Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori is set to leave his duties during the first Test against India in Perth to attend the IPL mega auction as the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
This decision has raised eyebrows, particularly because the auction coincides with the Test match, which begins on November 22 at Optus Stadium.
Key Details of Vettori’s Departure
The IPL auction will take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24-25, creating a scheduling conflict for Vettori and other IPL coaches such as Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, who are also in Perth for various roles.
Vettori has been Australia’s bowling coach across all formats since 2022, working closely with head coach Andrew McDonald.
His dual commitments highlight the growing trend of coaches balancing international roles with franchise responsibilities.
Despite the unusual circumstance, Cricket Australia (CA) has expressed full support for Vettori’s participation in the auction.
A team spokesperson stated, “We are very supportive of Dan’s role as Head Coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad,” confirming that he will complete final preparations for the Test before departing for Jeddah.
He is expected to rejoin the Australian team for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series after attending the auction.
Impact on Team Dynamics
This marks a significant moment in cricket coaching dynamics, as it is the first time Vettori will leave a Test match mid-way to fulfill franchise obligations.
Previously, he managed to balance his commitments during series against Pakistan without interruption.
The decision underscores the increasing influence of T20 leagues like the IPL on international cricket schedules and coaching roles.
In Vettori’s absence, Lachlan Stevens, CA’s national development coach, will step in as interim assistant coach during the Perth Test.
The Australian team is also preparing for potential future scenarios by advertising for a full-time national pace bowling coach who could take over during Vettori’s absences.
Vettori’s Role and Contributions
Vettori has been instrumental in shaping Australia’s bowling strategy and preparing players for various challenges.
Ahead of his departure, he was actively involved in training sessions at the WACA ground, working with bowlers and assisting batters in facing spin challenges posed by India’s Ravindra Jadeja.
The presence of consultants like former Australian batter Michael Hussey and all-rounder Jim Allenby further bolsters the coaching staff as they prepare for the Test series.
Both have previously worked with the team and will continue their support leading up to the match.
