The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced stringent new regulations for practice sessions ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

These rules aim to ensure that the grounds and pitches are in prime condition for the league matches while providing teams with adequate practice opportunities. Here are the key aspects of the new regulations:

Limited Practice Sessions

  • Maximum Sessions: Teams are allowed a maximum of seven practice sessions, each lasting up to three hours under floodlights. Out of these, two can be practice matches or open nets, as decided by the team.
  • Practice Matches: These must be played on one of the side wickets of the main square. If a team chooses to hold a practice match under lights, the duration should not exceed three and a half hours. Prior written approval from the BCCI is required for practice matches.

Restrictions on Main Pitch Usage

  • Pre-Match Restrictions: No practice sessions or practice matches are allowed on the main square in the four days leading up to a team’s first home match. However, each team will be allocated a side wicket for range-hitting drills during this period.
  • Coordination with State Associations: The home team may coordinate with the respective State Association if they require any further arrangements.

Practice During the Tournament

  • Facilities Provided: Teams will have access to two nets in the practice area and one side wicket on the main square for range hitting. In Mumbai, if both teams are practicing simultaneously, they will each get two wickets.
  • No Open Nets: Open nets will not be allowed, and teams cannot use the wickets if the other team finishes their practice early.
  • No Practice on Match Days: No practice will be allowed on match days to ensure the pitch remains in optimal condition.

Background and Rationale

These new regulations are part of the BCCI’s efforts to maintain pitch quality and ensure a fair playing field for all teams.

The decision comes after the venues have already hosted several domestic matches, which have taken a toll on the pitches.

By limiting practice sessions and restricting main pitch usage, the BCCI aims to preserve the condition of the grounds for the high-stakes tournament.

The IPL 2025 season is set to begin on March 22 with an exciting opener between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

These new regulations will be in effect as teams prepare for the season, requiring them to adapt their practice strategies accordingly.
