Former Indian Cricketing great Sunil Gavaskar opined that MS Dhoni failed to support from the other batting end when young Shivam Dube was hitting during CSK’s chase against Punjab Kings. The defending champions got off to a horrendous start in the tournament as they have suffered back-to-back three defeats in the ongoing IPL season.

Punjab Kings managed a respectable total of 180 runs in stipulated 20 overs. And, it looked as if CSK will give a tough fight to the 2014 IPL finalist but that didn’t happen. CSK lost wickets in a bundle and was cruising towards a humiliating defeat. Robin Uthappa, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Moeen Ali got out scoring in single figures for CSK.

Sunil Gavaskar unimpressed with MS Dhoni’s batting vs PBKS

Chennai Super Kings had hope as their in-form batsman Shivam Dube was smashing the bowlers all across the park with MS Dhoni standing on the other batting end. Many thought the former Indian skipper will guide the team to their first victory of the season. But, he failed in living up to the expectations of the cricket fans.

Dhoni struggled to rotate the strike due to which Shivam Dube took the risk and got out. The cricket pundits felt that the former CSK skipper struggled and failed in the match to score runs on a good strike rate.

In a chat show at StarSports, Sunil Gavaskar said that everyone expects MS Dhoni to at least rotate strike if not hitting the ball from the word go. But that didn’t happen in the game against Punjab Kings. Dhoni played a strike rate of 83 in the match against PBKS. As per the former cricketer, CSK got stuck in the match when Dhoni failed to bat well.

“With MSD, what you see is that even if he doesn’t start hitting the big ones, he is moving the strike along, getting those ones and twos. He wasn’t quite able to do that this time around. That’s where CSK got stuck just that little bit,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

“If they had a situation where Shivam Dube was hitting the ball so well, they needed to get a move on along with him. That didn’t quite happen. Look at those some of those dot bills that he played, yes, later on, he made up with the boundaries.

In the end, Gavaskar asserted that this is a difficult situation for Chennai Super Kings. For the first time, CSK has lost three games on a trot. Now, it will be interesting to watch how new captain Ravindra Jadeja will guide his team out of this situation.

“Surprise, big surprise. They have always been a team who were able to make comebacks. This time they have lost 3 matches on the trot,” Gavaskar added.

“The new captain will be under tremendous pressure, yes he has got MSD to support him, but at the end of the day, the buck will stop with him with CSK hasn’t won anything at the moment. You need to turn it around very, very quickly. They can do it, there are 11 more games to go. We saw what happened with KKR last year.
