Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his estranged wife, Dhanashree Verma, are in the final stages of their divorce proceedings, with the Bombay High Court speeding up the process due to Chahal’s upcoming commitments in IPL 2025.
The couple, who filed for divorce on February 5, 2025, has reached an agreement that includes an alimony settlement of ₹4.75 crore, with ₹2.37 crore already paid by Chahal.
Court Proceedings
On March 19, 2025, the Bombay High Court directed the Bandra Magistrate Court to expedite the divorce case, requiring a decision by March 20.
This urgency stems from Chahal’s participation in the IPL, where he is set to play for the Rajasthan Royals starting March 22.
The court waived the mandatory six-month cooling-off period typically required under Section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act, allowing both parties to finalize their divorce without further delay.
Background of the Divorce
Chahal and Verma have been living separately for over two and a half years, citing compatibility issues as the primary reason for their split.
They sought a mutual consent divorce, but their initial request to waive the cooling-off period was denied by a family court on February 20 due to concerns about compliance with alimony payments.
However, following a joint plea to expedite proceedings, the High Court ruled in favor of waiving this requirement.
Alimony Agreement
The agreed-upon alimony amount of ₹4.75 crore has been a focal point of the divorce settlement. Chahal has already transferred ₹2.37 crore to Verma as part of this agreement.
The remaining amount will be settled once the family court finalizes their divorce decree.
Rumors were suggesting that Verma initially sought a much higher alimony figure of ₹60 crore; however, her family has publicly denied these claims as baseless.
Implications for IPL 2025
With Chahal’s focus now shifting back to cricket, he has been actively training with the Rajasthan Royals in preparation for the upcoming season.
His performance in IPL 2025 will be closely watched, especially given his status as one of the highest-paid spinners in the league after being acquired for ₹18 crore.
