England batter Harry Brook has made the surprising decision to withdraw from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, just 12 days before the tournament’s start.

This move has significant implications for Brook’s future in the IPL, as he risks facing a two-year ban due to the league’s new rules regarding player withdrawals.

Background:

Brook was acquired by Delhi Capitals for Rs 6.25 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction.

However, he has chosen to prioritize his commitments with the England national team, citing the need to recharge after a busy period and prepare for upcoming series.

This marks the second consecutive season Brook has withdrawn from the IPL, having pulled out last year due to personal reasons following the death of his grandmother.

Reason for Withdrawal:

In a statement, Brook expressed his regret to Delhi Capitals and its fans, stating that playing for England remains his priority.

“It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series.

To do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date,” he explained.

Potential Ban:

The IPL introduced a new rule ahead of the 2025 season to address the issue of players withdrawing after being picked at the auction.

According to this rule, any overseas player who registers for the auction and then makes themselves unavailable before the start of the season will face a two-year ban from participating in the IPL, unless the withdrawal is due to an injury or medical condition confirmed by their home board.

Impact on Delhi Capitals:

Brook’s withdrawal leaves a significant gap in Delhi Capitals’ lineup, as they had expected him to play a key role in their campaign.

The team has yet to announce a replacement for Brook or confirm their captain for the upcoming season.

Delhi Capitals will face Lucknow Super Giants in their first match on March 24, and finding a suitable replacement will be crucial for their success in the tournament.
