Cameron Green’s sensational century propelled Mumbai Indians to a resounding victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in Match 69 of IPL 2023 at the electric Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
After a scintillating batting display by SRH openers Vivrant Sharma and Mayank Agarwal, who notched up sparkling fifties, Mumbai Indians faced a daunting target of 201 runs.
Chasing with determination, Ishan Kishan made his intentions clear with a six and a four off Nitish Reddy before falling victim to Bhuvneshwar’s delivery, caught brilliantly by Harry Brook.
However, Rohit Sharma was given a lifeline when Sanvir Singh dropped a difficult catch at mid-wicket. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Rohit and Green launched a blazing counter-attack.
Green punished SRH’s bowlers by smashing boundaries and towering sixes. With his aggressive strokes, Green reached his half-century off a mere 20 balls, leaving the spectators in awe.
Mayank Dagar tried to break the partnership, dismissing Rohit for a well-made 56 off 37 deliveries. Suryakumar Yadav joined Green, and the duo showcased their prowess with an array of boundaries. Green, determined to secure victory, unleashed a breathtaking onslaught, peppering the boundaries with remarkable power and authority.
As the match reached its climax, the tension mounted. Green stood at 99 runs, with just one run needed for victory. Bhuvneshwar’s slower delivery deceived Green, but a fumble by the keeper gave Green the opportunity to complete his maiden IPL century with a boundary.
The entire stadium erupted in celebration as Green achieved this significant milestone and sealed the win for Mumbai Indians.
Earlier in the match, Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl. Mumbai Indians bowled with precision and swing, frustrating the SRH openers. Mayank Agarwal attempted to accelerate the scoring rate, hitting a couple of boundaries.
Abhishek Sharma joined the onslaught, displaying power and precision in his shots. However, a mix-up between Agarwal and Sharma almost cost Agarwal his wicket, but he survived due to a missed direct hit.
Agarwal and Vivrant continued their boundary spree, reaching a formidable 100-run partnership. Agarwal achieved a half-century off just 32 balls, while Vivrant also scored his maiden IPL fifty off 36 deliveries. The duo unleashed an onslaught in the 13th over, accumulating 19 runs, including a massive six from Vivrant.
Akash Madhwal halted their dominance, dismissing Vivrant at deep mid-wicket for a commendable 69 off 47 balls. Agarwal, undeterred by the wicket, continued to attack, adding more boundaries to his name. However, Madhwal struck again, ending Agarwal’s impressive innings at 83 off 46 deliveries.
Mumbai Indians’ bowlers staged a remarkable comeback in the slog overs, conceding only 32 runs in the last four overs. Jason Behrendorff, Chris Jordan, and Akash Madhwal showcased their skills, taking crucial wickets and restricting SRH to 200/5.
With an exhilarating century from Cameron Green and a splendid bowling effort, Mumbai Indians kept their hopes alive in the tournament and delighted the home crowd at the Wankhede Stadium.
