The table-toppers Gujarat Titans continued their dominance of the IPL 2023 with a commanding win over the Lucknow Super Giants in Match 51.
Batting first at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Titans posted a massive total of 227/2 thanks to a brilliant opening partnership between Wriddhiman Saha (81 off 43) and Shubman Gill (94 not out off 51).
In reply, the Super Giants got off to a flying start with Kyle Mayers (48 off 32) and Quinton de Kock (71 off 42) before a collective effort from the Titans’ bowlers, led by Mohit Sharma (4-0-29-4), saw them dismiss the visitors for 171/7, securing a comfortable victory by 56 runs.
The Titans started their innings with a bang as Saha and Gill put on a breathtaking display of power-hitting.
Saha smashed the LSG bowlers to all parts of the ground, hitting 12 fours and two sixes in his innings, while Gill played a sublime knock, hitting 10 fours and four sixes. The duo added 173 runs for the first wicket, setting a massive target for the visitors.
In response, the Super Giants got off to a great start with Mayers and de Kock hitting the Titans bowlers to all corners of the ground. Mayers smashed three consecutive fours off Hardik Pandya in the second over, while de Kock hit a couple of fours off Shami in the third over.
After that, Mayers smashed one over mid-wicket for a six and crushed the final delivery through the covers for a four to finish the over with 19 runs.
The pair attacked Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad’s spinners, scoring 22 runs off two overs to bring the score to 72/0 at the end of the Powerplay.
However, the Titans fought back with a brilliant running catch by Rashid Khan to dismiss Mayers, breaking the 88-run opening partnership. De Kock brought up his fifty off 31 balls, but wickets kept falling at the other end as the required run rate kept climbing.
Mohit Sharma led the way for the Titans with a fantastic spell of 4-0-29-4, removing Badoni and Krunal Pandya off consecutive balls to seal the victory for the home side.
The Pandya brothers experienced an emotional day as both Krunal and Hardik Pandya led their respective squads for the first time in IPL play.
Overall, the Gujarat Titans showed their class once again, dominating the Lucknow Super Giants with a commanding performance.
With eight wins from eleven matches, they extend their lead at the top of the table, while the Super Giants will need to regroup after a disappointing defeat.
